The Surf Coast

We left Lorne, stopping at Loutit Bay to admire the beach and the town as we headed down the Great Ocean Road.

Our next pause was at Eastern View to watch some surfers and have a look at the beach and the lighthouse at Point Spilt.

We stopped at the Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch to check out the history of the construction of the road.

There are some very nice vacation homes all along the road, some with very unique structures on the steep bluffs.

At the pull out at Urquhart Bluff, we met this couple from New Hampshire that have been riding their tandem bike for three months in Tasmania. We were able to get some good tips from them for our upcoming trip there.

We did a diversion from the highway at Anglesea to view the kangaroos at the Anglesea Golf Course. Just like Canada Geese at home.

From there it was a side trip to Point Addis Overlook to watch some surfers and get a view of the famous Bells Beach near Torquay.

We stopped at the viewing area for Bells Beach. They were just completing the set up for a world class surfing event this weekend.

That meant lots of surfers in the water practicing for the competition.

We watched for a bout a half an hour then had to leave so we would get into Melbourne by around 3:00 pm before the traffic got bad. Melbourne is a large city of about 4 million and we are staying just south of the CBD at St. Kilda, about a block from the beach. I actually got to drive on a bit of the road used in last weekend's F1 race. After checking in, it started to get really windy with some showers so we didn't venture out until it was time to eat supper. There are lots of restaurants within a block or two so we didn't have to travel far to find a nice modern Italian restaurant that had be best pizza we have had since Italy.
