Victor Harbor to Robe South Australia

Our drive today was along the Fleurieu Scenic Route passing through Port Elliot and Goolwa on our way to Wellington. We passed by the Kingsbrook Inn and I just had to stop.

The weather today was a bit variable with temperatures of only around 20C and the odd shower interspersed with sunshine but very windy. So little traffic on the highway made for easy driving as we passed through dry farmland with the occasional small village.

The stone building architecture in this part of Australia continues to interest me.

We had to take a short cable ferry ride across the Murray River at Wellington.

From there we travelled the Princess Highway which follows the mainland just inside the barrier sand dunes of Coorong National Park. This area is called the Limestone Coast. We did a diversion to a peninsula at a park access and had an encounter with some emus. There was a flock of about ten that did not seem to be too disturbed by our presence in the car.

We continued down the corduroy road and got to where we could see the waterway inside the barrier dunes.

In this area there were several salt ponds along side the highway. This is not snow but a thick salt crust.

At Kingston SE we encounter "Larry the Lobster".... 4 tonnes of fibreglass and steel.

An hour or so later, we got to Cape Jaffa and found another small wine region. We stopped at Cape Jaffa Wines for a sample. This area has a unique micro climate influenced by the ocean and the limestone soil. We thought their Chardonnay was quite nice.

Shortly after, we arrived at our destination of Robe, a seaside town that is a popular spot for folks from both Adelaide and Melbourne. Lots of modern high quality sea side homes in a village of about 1200 people. A brand new marina and lots of sea port history.

The plaques on the stairs commemorate all of the shipwrecks of the 19th century...

We took drive out to the headlands and had the opportunity to do some fabulous photography before the showers moved in from the sea. The Southern Ocean was a bit angry today....

Our Motel had this fantastic BBQ area so we picked up some food to grille for supper.

Aspiring to be on the next season of Masterchef Australia....
